A Grand Tour of Greece With a Rubber Rat
Corfu - Brindisi Italy
Hi again, Loads of travelling for me today, so i'll hop up onto M's rucksack out of harms way...The ferry is due in to Corfu town Harbour at 10pm to depart at 11:45, as before we don't trust this and arrive early and the quayside is thronging with Italians .
Our ferry is clearly late and then a ferry bound for Bari (quite near to Brindisi Italy) arrives. There is absolute chaos now as all the cars for the Brindisi ferry are lined up waiting to go on, but as the Bari ferry arrives first , the cars for this can't get through, one guy in a motorhome makes it, but the Bari ferry literally drops the ramp the camper scrambles on and three minutes later hauls it up and steams off. The port police shrug and slink off and those who couldn't get through have now got their vehicles to the front to see the ferry departing. They are in easy shouting distance (and Italians can sure shout) but the ferry crew just shrug, point to their watches and steam off into the night. (I doubt their conciences will be too deeply pricked) Further pandemonium now as the Bari cars are now at the front and the Brindisi ferry is backing in (Where's Frank Spencer in all this?). The guys who missed the Bari Ferry are sent to get new tickets, but we know that the ticket office is half a mile away and they have been sent in the wrong direction to the port waiting room which has nothing in it but a café. So when they get there, then get sent the right way, get their tickets and get back it's a sure think that this ferry will have gone too (It happens, we notice that some of the vehicles are quite distinctive and we don't see them get on 'our' ship)
As the ramp drops the Italians abandon all ideas about queuing and make a 50 person wide dash to the 2 person wide ramp with pretty obvious results. It great having a backpack as any slight turn will skittle an Italian trying to slither past you. Once on the Fragline ferry the 'ferry police' (stewards) decide we can't take our backpacks into the ship, they must be left oustide on the deck. Yeah right, Mark tells him to get stuffed (sort of -polite here) and walks past him, but he has backup in the lounge area and despite a great fuss we put the packs outside....for ten minutes until they go about some other anal task and bring them back in. Italian crew, the Greeks couldn't care less about rules. Ah well, we're on our way. The life of a ship's rat eh? See you later
