Good morning Vietnam!
And good morning to you all. Thought it was about time for an update. Since our last entry we've had our last few days in Cambodia and made it safely to bustling Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) in Vietnam. As we haven't got long to write, I'm going to be brief (I'm sure you'll prefer that anyway...)
In Sihanoukville it rained for the first 2 days so we amused ourselves - found a cool mini cinema with comfy chairs that all 16 of us rented and watched Juno and CLoverfield - very cool afternoon. The final day it was sunny so we spent the day at the beach, playing in sea, playing beach volleyball and getting sun burnt.
Left beach resort for capital - Phnon Penh. Not a nice city. Very smelly, rubbish everywhere, and when it rained (AGAIN) the drains didn't work. Spent a couple of days by river and seeing Killing Fields and Tuol Sleung (where Pol Pot conducted his mass genocide in the 1970's). Really sad places, and not that well maintained. Glad we went but was quite alot to take in.
Early morning journey across border to Vietnam. Reached Ho Chi Minh - hotel in city centre. The roads here are CRAZY! 4.5million motorbikes in the city (and its always rush hour). Driving is insane. Crossing the road is an adventure. Cool city though, friendly and modern. Been to markets, eaten where Clinton ate in 2000, walked the city and seen the sights. Yesterday went on excursion to islands and Cu Chi tunnels with new group (8 people from before, 3 new ones plus new guide - Zoom!) Had motorbike rides through jungle, canoed through river, 5 course seafood Vietnamese lunch on Dragon Island. Cu Chi Tunnels were weird and impressive - where Viet Cong hid from American bombers. Went in the tiny tunnels, saw the traps for soldiers, plus bomb craters and remnants of blown up US tank.
Leaving Ho Chi Minh on train tonight for beach resort on east coast. going to be fun! New guide has given us rice wine for the journey - it's 45-50% and yesterday Roy had 4 shots of it before 11am.
Hope all good at home, will try update photos soon. Keep writing the messages - they make us happy!! Missing you all, lots of love, Jo and Roy xxx
