Singapore is only two hours from Mersing but we didn't arrive until 8pm. We spent all day travelling and waiting around, Pete got searched by customs and had to pay tax on his single pouch of tobacco and got a black mark against his name for not declaring it.
We searched for the elusive metro station but ended up jumping in a cab which drove us into the centre of the red light district where our hotel was. Knowing how expensive Singapore is we booked a reasonably cheap hotel on the Internet and decided to only stay two nights.
The following morning we got up early and managed to find the nearest metro station. We headed towards the city centre and had a good wander. Our first stop was the Marina Bay Sands hotel, comprising of three huge towers with a boat like structure spanning the top, it's a very impressive building and a very expensive hotel. We continued our walk around the city, stopping briefly to watch a cricket match and Sunday league football. It was a bit odd seeing a cricket field in the middle of the city. We then went to China town and looked round the market and had some tasty street food.
That evening we headed back to Marina Bay Sands and had a look at the huge sculptures in the park opposite. It was quite impressive, huge colourful funnels with a boardwalk connecting them. We walked back over the bridge and through the hotel, disappointing that it wasn't as grand as expected in side. Outside the front of the hotel there was a huge water and light show so we sat on the steps and waited for it to start. It was amazing with pictures projected on to the fountains and flames bursting up out of the water and bubbles floating through the air. After dinner we headed back and sorted our stuff out as we were heading to the airport first thing.
