Our trip to Nice went pretty well, aside from the fact we got on the wrong train in Narbonne and got halfway to Paris. no matter, we still made it to Nice on time. We stayed In a quaint old place in the heart of Nice historic quarter just 300m meters from the beach.
the azure water was brilliant, clean and cooling - perfect. Only challenge was the beach itself. NoT a grain of sand to be seen anywhere, just rocks the size of fists. So when Henry and I went to go for a swim we must have looked like a right pair of toss pots as we flinched our way to the water. Once in, it was fine. Had a great swim while we contemplated our plan of attack to exit the water, up what was a fairly steep slope over the rocks in bare feet without making a spectacle of ourselves.
Henry did ok and exited gracefully (or should I say painfully), while I resorted to exiting on all fours - yep not pretty I know but significantly less painful :)
Took a short bus ride up to the Musee Mattisse located on a hill just behind Nice, where there was a museum, parklands and an old monastery which was fascinating - very different atmosphere to the traditional European churches.
Afterwards we had a quick visit to Monaco. Our host recommended going there by bus and coming back on the train - which was good advice only Sabrina had a turn of motion sickness and spent the time in Monaco sitting in a cafe trying to recover.
Henry and I took a stroll along a section of the F1 track, then up to the Monte Carlo Casino and back past the harbour admiring all the massive boats and expensive cars. We would seen at least a dozen new Ferraris, half a dozen new Rollers and a myriad of other elite sports cars - there is some serious money in this town. We were speculating just how much the boats alone on Monte Carlo harbour ( which is not that big) would come too - certainly in the 100's of millions.
We opted out of walking up to the Principality of Monaco, given how Sabrina was feeling and the heat today - reached 34deg.
All that done in one day, chalked up 18km and 52 stories of stairs climbed. Time for a rest, and a cleansing Caipiroska or 2.
So far this trip I've walked 175km's and climbed 369 stories, which is just a little bit more than walking up and down and the tallest building in the world the Burj Kalifia in Dubai.
Tomorrow we are off to Rome for a few days. So it's Au Revoir to France for a little while.
