A relatively early start as we were catching a tram to St Kilda. I have never been there that I remember so it seemed a good idea. The ride down was quick and we strolled along the main café district to Abbey Road café for brunch. This place was decorated with music memorabilia, especially the Beatles. After this were walked down past a closed Luna Park (weekday, not school hols) to the sea front were Jason attempted to point out the 'surf'. The waves were 2 - 3 times bigger than those at Rosebud. Some of the waves were coming in at a good 10, maybe 15 cms. Nice try Jason but Sydney has better city beaches and nothing you can show me in Melbourne will change that.
At the end of the 'beach' there is a long jetty out to a Victorianesc pavilion. It was a nice, if a little windy, walk out but made for a few Kodak moments. Apparently there is a penguin colony on the stone break water at the end. Back along to pier and past Luna Park (still closed), nothing sadder really that a closed fair ground, to the main street and a cake shop. The cake shop was everything it was talked up to be. Pavlova, Chocolate Mousse and French Fruit Tart and the sugar rush from hell. Lucky for the Tea and Coffee. Back on the tram to the city for dinner out.
Back to the city and the Aquarium. The first super sight was the Penguin exhibition. It was terrific with several Penguins on eggs and one even with a chick. After the Penguins it was generally a good Aquarium, but with the standard tunnels through tanks with sharks, rays and snapper and ornamental tanks with tropical fish, freshwater fish and a few frogs. The shark talk was good and no where near as patronizing as the guide at the Zoo. But a little dig at Sydney Aquarium so I no longer feel guilty about all the Melbourne digs over the last few days.
We went to the same Japanese restaurant that Jason and Adam took Pippa and I to a few years back when we were in Melbourne for Yasmin and John's wedding. It was incredibly good food and very traditional in flavours. Not to mention the very nice Shiraz. Back at the hotel for coffee and a final good bye as I don't think I will get to Melbourne again for a few years. But hopefully one last hurrah in Beechworth in a few weeks if I get the chance to get down there. Thank you Jason and Vanessa for a fantastic, fun and relaxing time in Melbourne and Pippa and I will certainly show you a great time when (not 'if') you get to London. You will be impressed by the London surf. HAHA
