Well what a packed few days! Left Bangkok on Wednesday and made our way to Ayutthaya where we had arranged to stay at what turned out to be a great little boarding house, resided over by the most eccentric old lady I have ever met! She was great. Really helpful but completely mad and spoke the weirdest English I've ever heard. There was a lovely big lotus pond in the back with a pagoda reaching out into the middle. The only problem was the cockrels wandering around the garden that woke us up at 4am! Went on a tour of the ancient city of Ayutthaya on Wednesday evening which was great and unexpectedly took in the elephant camp. Loads of lovely, big, smelly but very cute elephants. Some of them are working elephants doing the usual tourist rides etc, but they looked pretty well cared for. We fed the baby ones then went on our way. Next day we had more animal antics at Lopburi. They have a temple which is completely over-run with monkeys! They were everywhere!! Robin had them climbing all over him - pictures are hilarious. One bit him though (a baby one had a little nibble - nothing serious) which he wasn't happy about. Today is Robin's Birthday (making the 4am start even less welcome!) and we have moved on to a little spot in the rainforest just outside Phitsanulok. He is off having a Thai massage as I write (his Birthday present from me so I hope it doesn't come with any extras!!) and we have a great hut overlooking the river. Tomorrow we're going in search of a dramatic waterfall in the forest - hope we don't get lost! x
