The story so far....
Hi all,
It has been a while since we last wrote, but then quite a lot has happened!
From Lhasa, we took ten days to reach Nepal and our trips final destination, Kathmandu. It was a long, long road journey undertaken by 4x4 jeep. We stopped at monasteries along the way and visited a fort at Gyantse. The journey also included a visit to the Tibetan Everest Base Camp - which was pretty special. Everest just sits there, majestically towering above everything. I decided it looks like a mountain should do - it had snow on the top and was pointy!!!! ^
The scenery of the Tibetan Plateau was particualrly stunning, a semi-arid desert with valleys full of Tibetan people using every last inch of arable land to cultivate a little more Barley. It was harvest time so people were working in the fields everywhere. We travelled over passes with spectacular mountain viws and into valleys where rivers flowed. One thing we are not missing now though is the high altitude. At one pass we were as high as 5,200 but as an average we were travelling around 4,000 - you get used to it but even walking up a few monastery steps becomes hard work.
Our last day in Tibet was a huge contrast. We jeeped down about 2,000 metres and suddenly the valley became lush and alive with wonderful waterfalls and loads of tropical greenery. It was a pleasure and a relief after over a week without seeing many trees and most of the land being shades of brown.
And then into Nepal - one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen. It reminds me of India, but less poverty and just stunning scenery. We spent one night just outside Kathmandu which provided a view across the rolling hills and after a breif stop at the amazing city of Bakhtapur we were quickly immersed into Kathmandu's hussle and bustle.
KTH is a great city, friendly people, a shoppers paradise and just so full of life. As the tour finished we booked into a good standard hotel for a little R+R, fed up on woodfired pizzas and salads and takne in a few of the sights. Despite the recent troubles here the city continues, just as London does/would.
Tomorrow we leave for Pokhara and a one week trek to the Annurpuna and then more relaxation by Pokhara's lakeside. Can't wait. Now we are of tour the holiday begins!!!!
Other news - Kylie cut my hair a little. It was getting in my eyes and now I have a nice bob/bouffant. I fell over in the street twice on our first day in Kathmandu and I hadn't even been drinking! Oh, yes and we got engaged.
More updates soon
