Saturday 11th April
We bought an all day ticket for the trams, which went past the hotel. The trams are the most convenient way of getting round the city. There are a lot of old building in Melbourne and the city had a very different feel to it from the other city's we had been in Australia. We had a walk around the city centre, it is a large city which is quite spread out and there seemed to be a lack of people about.
We caught a tram to the park and went to have a look at Cooks cottage, the cottage which Captain Cook was brought up in in England and which had been dismantled in Yorkshire England and rebuilt brick by brick in the park in Melbourne. It was funny to hear some Aussy kids asking their mom 'do English people really live in houses this small'
We headed over to the harbour area , where there was a lot of building work going on, and looked around the boats and shops.
Later at night we caught the tram out to St Kilda, which is a seaside town just outside the city. We sat and had fish and chips for tea. The town was very busy and llively.
Sunday 12th April
Went back into the city to have a look at the market which is held every Sunday morning along the river bank, mostly craft stalls. We sat in Federation square for a while to use the Internet, one of the Telecom company's donated free wireless in the square which was very useful.
Caught the tram back out to St Kilda, to see it in the day light. It is an old fashioned type seaside town with a beautiful beach and sea front. We walked along the front and around the headland to Elwood beach where we saw dolphins out in the bay. It was quite windy round the headland. Later we went in to the city centre for dinner before going back to the hotel to pack.
