Tuesday 17th February
Selamat datang ke Langkawi (welcome to Langkawi), We we arrived at Kuala Perlis at about 8 O;clock and made our way to the ferry terminal, we caught the boat at 9 O;clock. As we left the land behind, the water became a beautiful turquoise colour, there were lots of small islands on the way and the journey took us about 1 hour. Once we had landed we found a taxi driver and agreed a price to take us to the hotel. We didn't realise at the time but the hotel we booked over the internet was in the most popular part of the island (Chenang) and was right by the beach. We dumped the cases and made for the beach which was beautiful white sand and turquoise sea. Chenang is not a very large resort, but the biggest on the island and considering it is the height of the season there are not too many people around.
Wednesday 18th February
We decided to hire out a scooter to see the island, the cost per day of doing so was £5. We set off with our map in hand the first port of call was the Seven Wells waterfall in one of the Geoforest park on the island. The water fall and wells were a good walk up the hillside, about 600 very steep steps, which was hard going especially in the heat, but the views from the top made it all worth while, you could see down to the coast. You could bath in the wells but the water was very cold! We had to warn a couple of Americans who had left their bag and belongings whilst having a dip, that a group of monkeys had appeared out of the trees and were heading for their things, apparently the monkeys would make off with bags if they thought there was food in them. As we made our way down the hillside there were lots more monkeys but they kept their distance as we had heard stories of them being aggressive.
Next we headed off to Mahsuri's tomb who was executed in the early 1800. It's a Malaysian story She was accused of adultery and supposedly put a curse on the island for the next seven generations. After this we headed through the centre of the island to Kuah town, the main town on the island and where the ferry terminal is. It was nice to see the island which is very green, there are a lot of rubber trees which were being tapped for the rubber. Also lots of hills, the island although it is quite large has three Geoforest park areas on it, which is nice to see they are looking after the islands natural areas.
We then headed back to the beach and sat with a beer and watched the sun go down. The sun set was good but not as spectacular as the one in Goa.
Thursday 19th February
The first job of he day was to find petrol for the scooter, we decided to keep it for one more day to explore the rest of the island, we filled it up which cost us the grand total of £1!. We headed for the north of the island to have a look at the black sand beach, there was some stunning scenery, one eyesore up there was a huge cement works though, every thing around it was covered in a layer of dust. Tanjung Rhu beach at the north east tip was a very beautiful beach with only a couple of exclusive holiday resorts there. We then called in at Perdana Gallery which is full of objects given to Malaysia as presents from other countries, there were lots of vases, jewellery, and trinkets. We finished off along the road back to Kuah town again dropping in at the ferry port to get tickets to Thailand.
We had had rice to eat at lunch time and fancied just a sandwich for tea, which turned out to be an impossible task. Sandwiches are on the breakfast menu along with rice, mashed potato and various cooked meat dishes, the restaurants wont prepare them any other time.
Friday 20th February
