Arrived in New Zealand on the 1.11.15. We stayed in a guest house and slept the next night on their drive in a campervan on the drive, just to use their bathroom. The next day we drive towards Mount Cook. Amazing scenery and lakes (Tekapo and Pukaki). We walked and walked taking in the crystal blue waters and snow peaked caps. We slept on the first night by the side of a lake and woke to really bad weather, rain and wind. Really cold too!
The next day we woke to snow on the mountains and continued the journey to Mount Cook. We drove up past a lake to a national park and walked to Kea point, watched an avalanche. The area resembled Lord of the Rings films. We seen lots of sheep which we hadnt seen since leaving Wales. We stayed that night in a remote campsite in a forest with a chip butty from a nearby town. Froze again that night!
The next morning we woke to ice on the inside of the windows. We made our way back Christchurch having heard the All Blacks were doing a victory parade having won the World Cup. Great day and well worth the drive. We then headed back down towards Dunedin and stayed in a beach from campsite.
We took a trip to Dunedin museam which was great. Had coffee and lunch in the van and James went to use a local sports centre gym. On a drive towards Invercargill we stopped off in a pub for dinner and had the biggest meal ever of chips, sausage bacon and egg. Had a chat to two lovely ladies who gave us two quilts for the van as they knew how cold we had been, so kind! That night we stayed in a local campsite where everyone was drunk. Very odd.
The next day we headed too Bluff and walked along the antartic coastal path. We then drove to Ti-an ready to drive the Milford Sound road, amaxing. We stayed that night alongside a beautiful lake. We walked for 3 hours the next day for the best views ending with tuna sandwiches for tea as gas run out on van.
The next drive was towards Queenstown. Really cool place although very touristy. Stayed in a huge campsite with squeeky trees. Had our first shower in 3 days, yuk! Spent the day in Queenstown then drove to Wanaka through crazy hills , the van nearly died! We had spag bol and beers to celebrate making it.
We then headed towards Franz Joseph Glacier ready for our glacier walk and helicopter ride. Amazing, although a little scary, especially to hear a helicopter came down a few days later in the same place. Went to hot springs after to warm up. Scenery amazing, turquoise pools and pristine beaches. Following this we drove to Reefton old town and stayed the night in a site with a shower, spoilt! We then drove to Picton to catch a ferry.
On the 16.11.15 we found out we were 12 hours early for our ferry so spend the day walking aroung Picton marina town. Ferry ride was lovely. Had scones and cream and chips, what a treat. Spent the night in a campsite which wasn't the one we was supposed to be in. We then headed to Rotarura, and stayed the night in a site with a guy from Touloise and had a beer with him. He told us the reasons for travelling, very sad for a 21 year old. That day we visited the All Blacks museum which was cool. Then went to Hell's Gate geothermal site. Very small but intersting and stunk!
Didnt manage to write anymore of the blog but the list of places we visited on the remainder of our trip included; Auckland, Florance, Hobbiton, Eden Park, Fat Cat before returning to Sydney ready to fly home.
WHAT A TRIP!!!!
