As we pull away from the Hampton Inn in Bismarck, North Dakota, we all agree this is the worst hotel breakfast thus far. Not to say that the hotel was not great, because it was, and there was a variety of breakfast items, but nothing that was appealing. After hitting a roadblock on the I 94 west, we circle around a few times taking Dum Dum's bad advice, but in the end emerge victorious onto the alternate route. The scenery is simple, yet beautiful with low rolling hills of green and roadside clusters of old fashioned wooden mailboxes. Cooper is minutes from losing the battle to heavy eyelids and Brooke is being distracted from an upset stomach with Monsters versus Aliens..... Darn that large glass of apple juice she insisted on having with her breakfast. It remains difficult to ignore the hyperactive rattling from something in the back of the vehicle - for the second day in a row. Next rest stop will hopefully restore peace in the vehicle. We just pulled over into the Theodore Roosevelt National Park to see the Painted Canyon - and it was absolutely stunning. We agree that it is the most picturesque scene we have ever seen, in the absence of water. This pit stop is most highly recommended if ever coming this way. Robyn - they have passes for overnight camping :). Stopped for a quick lunch at Wendy's and then back in the car for more amazing scenery - absolutely the best state so far for great views. We will come out this way again if ever heading to the West Coast. Scooby Doo is on yet again, which seems to suit both Brooke and Cooper just fine. We have about three hours left of driving before we hit our Holiday Inn in Belgrade. Just checked in and have discovered that the hotel does NOT have a pool, despite being told so by the individual who made the reservations. We are ordering in as Cooper is fighting a bug and has a temperature (he did yesterday as well); Motrin is his new best friend. This works out well as today was a big driving day, but absolutely the best views of the whole trip.
