Rie & Stew Are Out Of The Office
Hello from Chile!!
We had a great flight over the andes and arrived in our hostel in santiago quite late in the evening. Shock horror - we needed to put jumpers on. Actually it was a nice feeling because in Brazil the nights were hot and humid. That was it for the jumpers though, they havent come out since.
Santiago is a very interesting and vibrant city. The people were very friendly (unlike Rio). The weather was perfect - hot and sunny in the day but cool at night. We went exploring for a couple of days.
We came across an exhibition of David Hockney and Tracey Emmin in the fine arts museum, which was truly excellent. Plus it was free, which would never happen in the UK. Spent ages there.
We climbed up the hill fort to get great panoramic views of the city. Marie escaped the cable cars again!!
We paid a visit to the central market. Its like a fresh fruit and veg market, and a fish and meat market, with excellent restaurants all under one roof which, by the way, was made in Birmingham when we were ace metalworkers. Got big respect for the Villa shirt but again no-one had heard of the Forest!! It was worse than the Tunisian markets for getting hassled - one after another the waiters lined up to try to get your custom, but it was all light hearted fun. The food was great, if a bit pricey.
On Thursday we went on a tour of the Concha y torro winery, which is the biggest in Latin America. Got to try a few local brews. Have a look at the photos!
On Friday we got the bus to Valparaiso. It was a really nice coach, and the 2 hr journey only cost us 2 quid each. Valpo is a port town and has stronger winds than Stewart after a Keema Saag. His mullet is suffering. Its a weird and wonderful place, built literally on the side of a hill. Maps are useless here, as its just a series of alleys and staircases built one on top of the other. You pretty much just have to wonder around and get lost. They have built lift things into the hillside to get around - we'll try one later today.
Had a brilliant morning today. woke up , had brekkie, and found Villa v M'boro live on the tv. 2-0, up the Villa, i'm wearing the shirt with pride (at last!).
Off to La Paz tomorrow. Marie set for a great birthday on a bus and sleeping in an airport! We'll be in touch soon,
see you all soon
