Slight Scare at the Cambodian Border, 4 of us had visas issued in the UK which didnt "look" quite the same as the others. Having said this they were the nicest immigration people ever, even brought fans outside to cool us down and teaching us some Cambodian whilst they took photocopies of our visas. Anyway we eventually get on another boat into Cambodia, which I can only describe as metal yellow banana! probably a cool tour boat in 1960 but when its 38 degrees outside it was horrendous. After 3 hours we were glad to get off only to discover we had another 1.5 hours in a mini van. 12 of us and back packs. We have photos to prove how squashed in we were...but we had a laugh about it and arrived not being able to feel much from the waist down.
We were spoilt this week staying at the FCC in Phenom Phen and Ankgor Watt. We totally blew the budget but it was soooo lovely (until the laptop broke!) Phenom Phen is another big city but with national treasures to see like the National Museum and Grand Palace which were both spectacular. On a sadder note people come here to see the killing fields and S21 prison now museums dedicated to those killed in the genocide that took place during our life time. Im so glad that we went but it was a harrowing and humbling experience. On a brighter note, PP also has great shopping so we spent a few hours at the Russian market bartering for things we didnt need.
All the guys we met on the Mekong trip were staying near by so it was nice to have drinks and dinner with them in the evenings.
After 3 days or so we took the Mekong Express Limousine bus to Siem Reap.($10each) Not sure where the Limousine part fits in, there was definately no sign of it, although there was girl handing out fruit and inedible looking sandwiches and spraying air freshner in the loo after everyone????
We arrived 4 hours later and were collected by the FCC again and taken to the resort which was total paradise. Just lovely!
We spent 2 full days at the Angkor Watt temples even getting up at 4.30 to watch the sun rise only to find cloud, cloud and more cloud but worth it all the same. It really is the most stunning magical place. Rich got totally trigger happy so its going to take us ages to get through all the pictures. We also went to Kable Spear Waterfall but I will let Rich tell the story of my mass hysteria thinking we were going into Land Mine territory because I just wont do it justice. After 4 days here we flew back to Bangkok.
