Exploring the known and unknown
Day 29
19 May 2013
Hanoi
Two years ago, when visiting Sapa was looking around the market and spoke briefly to a lady who was buying some trinkets. During my 2 minutes conversation I learned that she lived in Hanoi and was a American who taught English in Hanoi, I guessed her age as late 60's .The same week I had met some more English teachers; one couple who taught English in China just across the border. I would love to do that for a while were my thoughts at the time but my life was in Brisbane.
The lady (Linda) and I exchanged email addresses. Linda promised me that she would write and explain who you can become a teacher, even if it was only for a short time.
A few days ago I send her an email and said that I would be in Hanoi for a few days. She replied that if it was on a Sunday I would be most welcome and could share "class" whatever that meant.
Today I met Linda and was introduced to a most rewarding few hours enjoying conversational English with a small group. It turned out that the students had un understanding of a variety of words, some more than others but the knowledge of how to string them together needed to be taught. Instead of an hour or so it went on for about 2 ½ - 3 hours. It was a lot of fun. One guy was a medical student, nice guy but what I had learned is, that I hope I never have to use a doctor in Vietnam as their knowledge is but limited. I get the feeling that nurses in Western countries are far higher trained than a “doctor” in Vietnam. I had a lot of fun and laughter with the students. After all was done and after hearing my story of getting robbed of my camera Linda gave me a spare Canon Powershot which ,she said , did not get much use. How nice, This lady is truly remarkable and at nearly 76 year of age still is going strong getting high on helping others. Great to see that there still lots of Florence Nightingale’s both male and female out there.
As I got my camera later in the day I only managed to take a picture of one of the students with the longest pony tail I have ever seen. When you look at the picture you’ll notice that if she would remove the hair clip that her hair would be even longer and probably touching the floor.
Another great day in Vietam
