Exploring the known and unknown
Day 6
Friday 26.4.13
Chaing Mai to Mae Sariang
Later this week, the Hostel I was staying at is closing down for annual holidays. This meant that I was not able to make a booking for my return on April 29. Therefore quick action was needed in the morning.
I first headed to Mr. Mechanic, the motorcycle shop to collect the bike. I had to follow one of the staff to the workshop to get the GPS fitted, which… I remembered after fitting did not have a Thailand map. Anyway it at least gave me a directional bearing and altitude. A survey around the neighborhood saw me finding a new hostel for 200 Baht per night ($6.60) I quickly went back to my hostel to collect my backpack which contained half of my gear. The rest I placed in my Louis motorcycle bag and bound it to the rack. I had a quick look at the map and off I went in the direction of highway 108.
Soon I had left the city behind me and was I able to pick up some speed. However the faster I went the hotter it became. I had been in this situation once before, that was in Morocco. I had noticed then that riding with the visor down was cooler than with the visor up. I was now in a situation that I did not have a visor or a windscreen. Even riding at speed my arms were wet with perspiration. At one stage I stopped in one of the towns I passed. The local 7/11 offered some coolness in their air-conditioned shop. The shop looked a bit like the Australian variety with the exception of a wider selection of food like hot dogs and other fast foods. A machine served ice chocolate and iced Coffee. After filling and drinking my cup I realised that I may have made an error. The Ice in this case does not come from ice-cream but from crushed ice. Hmm I wondered if that was filtered water or not. Later I started to feel a bit strange and had to burp a lot. I just hoped that I didn't have to throw up.
I checked the map and found that I had stopped at a village only a few km from a place called "HOT". Well one thing is for sure that it will never get cold there. The place where I had stopped they might as well have called it the town of '’Effing’’ because I have never been so Effing Hot as I was today!
At around 4 I rode in to Mae Sarieng. Also written as Mae Sariang I saw down the road. I found a nice place along the river to stay at. I had a quick shower which cooled me down somewhat.
