Exploring the known and unknown
Day 64
23 June 2013
Klaipeda is situated on the Lithuanian coast, one of its attractions is called the Curonian spit which is a strip of land running from the coast into the sea like a kind of peninsula. The strip of land features a beautiful beach on one side and a shoreline on the other. The ferry which takes people across the narrow straight actually caters for cars as well however today only travelers on foot or by bicycle were on board and the ferry was packed end to end mostly with locals taking advantage of the holiday weekend.
These beaches are similar to any beach in the world, but is all what the locals have as the land facing the Baltic sea does not have any beach to speak of. For me the point of difference that the water was only 12 -13 degrees.
The main attractions are the large sand dunes halfway down the strip just past the town of Nida. You can't go much further as you enter Russian territory. (Russia a kept a large section of land near Kalingrad, this section is separate from the main land Russia. The particular area has changed hands dozens of times as it use to be part of Lithuania, Poland and Germany.
The only downturn to get there is a 50 km bus trip to get there and a 50 km bus trip back again.
