Today we did a tour of the city of Saigon. Our first stop was the War Museum. This was a highly disturbing hour walking around looking at the photos and I wont go into the details of it unless you ask me in person. We were both fairly shuck by it. The guide gave us a lot of information about Saigon, but sadly his accent wasnt the best and the two Vietnamese women sitting next to us on the bus wouldnt shut up, and they closed he blinds. This has been a common occurence for us, Asian women on tours like this seem like they are doing them for the sake of it. Its like their husbands have gone off on a golf trip and stuck them on the bus to keep them out of the shops for the day, very annoying!!!
Next stop was the market. Not your average market. This place is more a wholesale market. They buy in goods from China and then people from the countryside come and buy them to sell them in their home towns. They transport everything back home on their mopeds of course. I didnt like it in there, it was like walking through a crowded factory full of rubbish things people dont need and a few massive sections of cloth, baby clothes and shoes. We also got stared at a lot in there and the sooner we got out the better. Still it was interesting to see in a way. Next stop was lunch. Lunch is always good!! After lunch we went to the Reunitification Palace. This used to be where the President of the south lived, the first president built the place but died before it was finished. The second lived here for about six years and the last president to live there was shot two days after becoming the president. After that the North and South joined up and the place was opened up as a tourist spot and not used anymore, maybe not immediately of course!
Our last stop was the Notre Dame cathedral. Regina got given out to for wearing her hat inside, her defence being she is a Buddhist now. There are flat screen tvs in the church, on the columns supporting the roof, I guess so taht those in the cheap seats down the abck can catch waht the priest says. Beside the church is the post office, its nice! They post stuff from there. Lots of french style architecture in the town. Eh not much else to say, yesterdays blog was long enough sure wasnt it. Off to the airport in a bit.... going to Da Nang. Saigon has been interesting
