Colleen & Tom's Explorations
This morning we travelled oh so slowly down to Halifax. We could've been there at 6am!!! We were still early when we arrived, so we sailed right up the river to a bridge, came to a complete stop and then turned around on our own axis. We had military helicopters buzzing the ship, and lots and lots of pleasure craft came to meet us. It was a great welcome.
Tom and I had an early lunch and were off the ship ASAP. We caught a taxi (an old cadillac) to the Avis depot. A man named Barry organised our car - a Chevrolet Malibu, gave us directions and suggested where to stay on PEI, so off we went. We had booked this trip so we could go to Prince Edward Island to see Green Gables, because Charlottetown was listed as a port, and then they took the port off the itinerary because the ship was too large. So we decided to do it ourselves as an overnight trip.
The roads are fantastic - 4 lane dual carriageway all the way to PEI. The car was very powerful. We left Avis at 1.32pm and arrived at the Confederation Bridge at 4pm. It took 10 minutes to cross the 13km bridge. We arrived at Green Gables at 4.57pm and it closed at 5pm!! So we went to Shining Waters Inn and checked in. We have a funny little room with a sloping floor.
We went to New Glasgow Lobster Suppers for dinner - a huge barn of a place with all you can eat mussels, soft drink and dessert. I had a 1lb lobster with a huge bowl of mussels and Tom had roast beef. Whilst waiting in line we met a nice couple from New Brunswick who were celebrating 39 years of marriage. Our waitress, Kandice, is in her final year of school before going to uni, on PEI because she doesn't want to leave home. 300 people fit in the upstairs portion, and another 300 downstairs. The food was lovely.
