Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Lovely sleep in today, then brekky at La Terrazza. We took it easy this morning, reading and enjoying The Secret Life of Pets as we watched the sea gliding past. As we were watching the wake forming at the side of the ship, we realised there was a turtle bobbing around in it - but I wasn't quick enough to take a photo unfortunately. We decided to go to the bar for lunch. They were doing an English Pub special with chicken curry, fish and chips and shepherds pie. We entered, being greeted by various waiters and ship's officers in their white uniforms. We found a lovely table for two over by the window and sat, only to find we had been followed by an officer who then greeted us by name. A few days ago we had been left a mid-cruise survey in our room and yesterday morning I'd completed it, naming all the wonderful staff who make our voyage special, and that my only gripe was that there'd been no bacon around the filet Mignon. Last night we'd received a letter thanking us for the response and advising us that the comments had all been passed on, and now we had Nicholas in front of us, the man in charge of food and beverages. He said how delighted he'd been to pass on our compliments to Zoltan, Alan, Michele, and the red-headed Italian waiter whose name he says is Davide. But he couldn't understand about the bacon with the filet Mignon. I explained that I'd been eating it that way since about 1975 and that's the way we make it in Australia. He was really interested and would like to try it because he said it is the most tender piece of beef but with the least flavour and he loves bacon and he would like to see the recipe. I told him I would find the recipe for him, which I did thanks to google (and allrecipes.com which he said he uses for himself). He said he will cook it for me! I pointed out that it must be an Americanised version of the authentic filet Mignon, which he said, if I were to order it in France would be a piece of pork! So we agreed that Tom and I will probably eat dinner in our suite tomorrow evening and he will see that we have filet mignon with bacon around it! He is gong to tell our butler! How bizarre though! How did he know who we were? He must've looked up our suite and memorised our faces? So there we were in the bar, eating fish and chips and singing along (using their lyric book) with the music, drinking a Pimms and then a Tom Collins, and there was a Chinese family of three also sitting and singing. As well as all the poms and Irish people. ''Twas interesting! After lunch we attended a lecture on Cartagena, and then later on went down to the bar for trivia. A lady asked to join us, with her husband (Jan and Joe) and they turned out to be from South West Rocks, and I think they're actually younger than us! They moved up to their "forever house" from Cronulla. So there we were, the four of us young people, and we came third!! We think the organiser had "dumbed" down the questions for us (what land do you enter through a wardrobe; who were Donald Ducks three nephews; oh as well as a tough one about golfers shoes that Joe knew). Jan and Joe were lovely and we sat and chatted some - this is their first cruise. But then we remembered that it was formal night so we had to go off and shower, shave and shampoo. Dinner was fine, with French champagne and three courses, but I just couldn't do dessert. Allan brought us a glass of Cadillac again which was lovely. After dinner we went up to our room for a rest until nearly 10pm when we wandered down to the lounge down the hall where we had six singers doing popular opera - it ranged from Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis, to Lakme, Riggoletto, Carmen, La Boheme, to some of the popular tenors songs, and then Nights in White Satin and The Winner Takes it all sung in Italian! It was a wonderful show!
