Colleen & Tom's Explorations
What an incredible day! Champagne breakfast by the pool was a great start! Then when we returned to our room we were quite diverted by furry critters jumping around in the trees next to our balcony! These turned out to be coatis (pronounced co-art-ees). And we saw many more of them throughout the day. Our tour guide got us started at 8.30, before the tourists were even allowed to enter the national park! We started out the front of our hotel, overlooking part of the waterfalls (Argentina owns the waterfalls, but Brazil gets the view!). We must've walked for a kilometre to get down to the middle part of the falls where we were able to walk out amongst it all - it was really noisy, powerful ..... and wet - it was wonderful! We then caught an elevator up to the top where our bus picked us up take us to the Argentinian side. Every time we crossed the border, our guide would spend about 20-30 mins having our passports processed, first by one country, then by the other country. When we were crossing a bridge the guide pointed out to us that we could see three countries: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. When we reached the Argentinian side we caught two little trains to take us down to the edge of the river. The train line was built in 2001, as was the walkway we then used to walk 1.2 kilometres out to the edge of the Devils throat. After that we caught the little train halfway back, where we found a place to eat lunch and be entertained by the wild coatis. Some of the group then walked down to the lower part of the river and did a boat tour that took them to under the waterfall. Others of us waited happily at the cafe. When the wet ones returned we boarded the bus and retraced our journey home. Once back at the hotel we showered and tidied before heading done to the bar to sample the Brazilian national cocktail, Caipirinha, made using Cachaca from sugar cane, and lime. It was really nice. We then joined the rest of the group for the buffet dinner. Lovely day all round.
