G-Day everyone,
Hope you're all well, we're still in Melbourne. I have listed some of the things that have happened since our last blog.
I had a job as a energy salesman which is one of the most depressing jobs you could do here. You had to knock on peoples doors and get them to switch retailers for gas and electricity and give them a discount. However most Australians are too lazy to switch, although it probably doesn't help telling them that. The job had its perks, I seemed to knock on doors of generous people who took pity on the poor pom and invited me in for several beer. I quit the job after 3 weeks, it completley sucked. Worst bit was getting to the office at 11 but not starting till 3 becasue it was run by baboons!!
Rach has a job in a coffee shop, she has to get up at 5.45am to start at 6:30am monday to friday. Not the best paid job in the world, but it's something to do. The only "excitement" was on thursday when we had a sudden gale and heavy rain and she ended up chasing 2 chairs down the street before they hit cars!
I have started playing hockey for St Kilda, 1st time I've been back on the pitch since my trip to Guernsey! I remember how to play, I haven't broken anything - so dont worry. I had a match today against La Trobe University, we came 2nd. It was nice to play again. I'm going to be playing for the rest of the time we're here in Melbourne. Team I played for today were pretty crap, they would make the Griffins look good, so going to move up a team or two.
I'm currently looking for a job, I've been trying to find something a bit more CV enhancing, but it's proving a little difficult. I've had some interviews so that's positive, just hope something comes from one of them. All of the jobs seen in the paper even for a wait staff or sandwich hand say you have to have a minimum of 3 years experience, i mean how hard is it to make a sandwich or serve food, if some spotty 17 year old can do it, then I definitley can. May have enhanced my CV in a few areas to show I have worked in areas like retail (m&s hehe), cafe work otherwise they're not interested in you. I think I can manage selling clothes in a retail outlet, hardly career inspiring and my knowledge of fashion is a good as James May's from Top Gear but I will take bull s***ting to a new level if I land a retail job!
Apart from job searching we've been a bit touristy last weekend. We went on a long wander around the CBD and also to a few spots such as Federation Square, which is now home to ABBA world interactive exhibition. We haven't gone in yet, think we can give it a miss! We're waiting for a day of clear blue skies before going up one of 2 viewing platforms about 55 storeys up for a view of the city and suburbs. Weather's not been great the past few weeks, the temperature's dropped and it's snowing at Mount Buller (not too far away). We walked through Chinatown last night, not quite as impressive as Hong Kong! We'll have to have another meal out soon - again, another Chinese! It's never anything else. I'm thinking of starting up Kudos out here, it might be a bit far for a takeaway from Canterbury.
We've got the apartment to ourselves at the moment. The last 2 guys moved out last week, one heading to Bali. We did a massive clean for a few hours after because they did none! It's good to have a clean living space. Apparently there's noone else moving in just yet so we've got the place to ourselves for a while. And there's a perk that we're getting credited with $80 for cleaning up the boys mess - not bad for 3 hours work!
My friend Ed has booked his flight out to Australia so he'll be arriving in Sydney on 3rd October, so we'll be heading up there a few days before that. From there we'll travel up the East Coast, maybe hire a campervan to save hassle of hostels. Rachel's friend Howard is coming out to Brisbane in September too so we'll hopefully catch up with him as well.
The socceroos are doing as well as england in the world cup - the main headline for 2 days was that the socceroos had lost 4-0 to germany. Nothing better to comment on obviously. Looks like they'll be out soon! We haven't watched any england games as they're on at about 4am. I've mastered the tram network using it to get to hockey and interviews, but i think it seems to work by donation only. i haven't paid for a single trip! whoops! might explain why it takes so long to get anywhere.
All the best to you all. We hope you are all enjoying the summer - we're jealous of the heat and sunshine! lots of love,
David and Rachel xxxxx
