Today our stop is in Split, Croatia. The original settlers here were Dalmatian tribes. The Emperor Diocletian built his retirement palace here and basically the town is built in or around the 8 acres of the Palace. The Croatian style are arches made of limestone.
There is a different feel here from the Greek islands we have visited. There was a huge farmers market with literally blocks of fruit, nut and vegetable stands. Then another huge fish market with the locals buying and selling.
In one of the Diocletian towers there were Damatian male singers. With the acoustics in the tower I could have stood and listened to them all day. They were great!
Split is a perfect spot for the cruising tourist as everything is located centrally right at the pier.
We ended our day here having a very leisurely lunch in the central square. One thing we have noticed about Europe is there is no rush or pressure to have your customers leave. They don't bring the bill until you ask for it.....even when they are busy. Much more relaxed than in the US.
There's lots of sailing in this area which intrigued Randy. It's really the only spot on our trip that seemed to have the right winds for sailing. The Mediterranean has very calm waters, which was great for the cruise.
