Westport was just a stop over on our way to Nelson, so there wasn't all that much to do there! We watched the sun set at the lighthouse, before going out for a slap up meal. The hostel we stayed in was really nice, so we spent the evening watching films in front of a log fire, playing with the hostel cat! The following day we drove to Nelson, stopping at Nelson lakes which were beautiful, even if the sand flies ate us alive! Nelson is a fairly small town, but we checked ourselves into the Palace hostel, which was pretty cool. The bathrooms were big wet rooms with almost cave like showers! but think cheap!
Whilst in Nelson we booked ourselves on a Kayaking tour around Able Tasman National Park. It was an early start but well worth it. The 4 of us were lucky enough to be the only ones on the tour, so we had the guides full attention. Our guide was called Eric and was a Maori, so the entire tour we learnt all about his culture, as he taught us his understanding of certain formations along the coast and he taught us chants to ask the gods to guide us through the tour. We were lucky enough to spot lots of seals both on rocks and swimming around. In total we Kayaked 15km before being picked up by the water taxi to take us back to base. On the way back, Erik managed to convince the skipper to do a slight detour so we could see split apple rock, which is a rock split in two! When we got to base Erik showed us to a hot tub, which we took full advantage of to warm ourselves after a full day at sea! That evening the guys had found a bar that was showing a rerun of the champions league final, so the plan was to head there for 10pm. When we got to the bar we found it was closed so a very sick looking Dan began a mad hunt to find a bar showing the match! Eventually we found a bar that said they would put it on for us, having searched through all the channels it soon became apparent the match wasn't on, and we soon we told it wasn't on till 12! Eventually the match started, but by 1/2 time Molly had had enough and had gone back to the hostel. It was at this point I must have fallen asleep, as when I woke up the bar was empty, Dave was snoring and the football was still going!! Extra time and penalties later and with a smile on Dans face we were finally allowed to go to bed!Today we drove from Nelson to Kaikoura and hopefully weather permitting we should be going whale watching tomorrow!
