Wednesday 10th April Day 5.
I woke feeling better, I think I have caught a flu, hence the aches and pains. I was swapped to an afternoon shift, so with a sleep in I'm ready for another day. Took it easy in the morning catching up on the blog. The power drops out frequently which makes blogging challenging because you have to log back into wifi, and nothing has saved!
The afternoon shift bus picks us up at 2pm, well it's suppose to! It got to us about 40 minutes late - Nepalese time. The main streets of Banepa are very dirty and littered, sanitation is not good. It's muddy when wet and dusty when dry, so I have started to wear a mask which has helped with my chest infection.
Back on the ward and the shift consists of routine ward work, post op observations, receiving patients back from theatre. Trying to have some fun in between by getting the Nepali Nurses to show us some of their dancing but they were a little shy. It felt like a long shift, especially with feeling unwell, we didn't get back until 9.30PM so a long day.
Thursday 11th April Day 6.
Another PM shift today, so spent the morning down by the infinity pool because it has amazing Wifi!, and chatting with a couple of the other team members. The Mountains were out a little, but still a lot of cloud. Walking down the dirt track to the pool you see marijuana growing wild on the side in the bush. After relaxing by the pool with coffee we enjoyed a lunch on the terrace before catching the bus to work.
Back on the wards in afternoon, and all is in full swing with new lot of post op patients, so it was a fairly routine night again. Still not feeling terribly well, I had to lay down in the back room for a while. "The back room" has become the sick bay for the staff, there has been a few staff that has required medical assistance of IV drips for D&Vs and time to lay down. By the end of the evening I was well and truly ready for bed, and remembered why I don't do shift work anymore!
During the shift and wondering around the hospital you see some amazing sights. The main entrance is always full of people, not sure what they are doing? In the courtyard you often see brand new babies being massaged by grandmother with oil, and they look really brutal and rough, giving the baby a good physio work out.
