Today, we set out to properly explore Venice (with a detour via the station to check out the left luggage situation). We bought a 36 hour vaporetto (waterboat) ticket and set off to the Piazza di San Marco.
The lines to get into the church were absolutely insane (it's not high season yet!), so we went in search of lunch and found a small cafe where we shared a plate of mixed cold cuts and a four seasons pizza (ham, mushrooms, artichokes, salami). This was to be the best pizza of the trip, though we didn't know it at the time.
We returned to the square and the lines were still horrendous, so we took a few photos and jumped on the vaporetto to the Isola di San Giorgio Maggiore. Conveniently forgetting it was Monday, we arrived to find the whole island closed so, after walking around it once, we took the vaporetto the long way to Accademia to see the art gallery - also closed. Sundays and Mondays are not our days.
Dinner was at a place near the Ponte di Rialto, which had a fairly suss looking menu (wurstel, egg and olive in a salad?), but I had a divine gnocchi al pomodoro and G said his seafood spaghetti was as good as the one in Athens, if not better.
I decided to have a crepe on the walk back after dinner, and it was MASSIVE but delicious (Nutella and banana), and then we came across a juice bar which also served cocktails with fresh fruit. We both bought vodka sours (his passionfruit, mine strawberry) and continued our walk to the Campo de la Maddalena, around the corner from where we were staying. We sat there with our drinks, people-watching for a while, and then went back to the hostel to pack and crawl into bed. 9:30am checkouts are not for us!
