We arrived in Vienna post-breakfast, at 8:30am, but weren't able to check in until 2pm. So, making the most of our time in Vienna, we set off to find Stephansdom and climb its southern tower for a full view of the city.
On the way, we stopped at the Kunst Historiches museum (classical art gallery). It was quite interesting and even had an Egyptian section with sarcophagi (but no mummies, much to G's disappointment). After leaving the gallery, we walked for about 45 minutes and couldn't find Stephansdom. We were quite hungry, so we sat down in a restaurant for lunch, only to walk out 20 minutes later, having been given a menu and then promptly ignored.
We headed back the way we'd come to re-orient ourselves and find somewhere to eat, ending up at a cafe in the Volksgarten where I had wiener schnitzel with parsley potatoes and he had sausage dumplings with sauerkraut.
Satiated, we set out for Stephansdom again, and actually found it this time. The climb up the tower was more difficult than I remembered it to be, but the view was worth it.
On the way back to the hostel, we stopped in at the Australian pub for a drink and to see their menu (our response was mainly 'since when do we eat that?' - especially to the grasshoppers!).
G had a nap after we checked in and then we headed around the corner to Mozart Stuberl for dinner (the same place my cousin Sam and I had eaten almost 5 years ago). Just our luck - school group night - they seem to be following us everywhere!
We were asked to share a table with an Englishman named Pete, who was extremely into Top Gear. I had boiled beef with 'roast potatoes' (more like a bowl of rosti - yum!) and a Viennese chocolate cake with cream and chocolate sauce, while G had goulash with dumplings.
After talking all through dinner, we ended up having a drink with Pete at his hostel (coincidentally the same one Sam and I stayed at when we were in Vienna) until he had to leave and catch his train. We then returned to our hostel to rest up in preparation for the longhaul to Prague in the morning.
