Two buses later and we were in Sihanoukville, on the beach again, but
in the rain, and it pretty much rained for three days straight! As it was
my birthday coming up we booked in to a lovely sea view bungalow, that
came with a limitless dvd collection and 4 adorable kittens, Who needs
the beach when you have dvd's and kittens! Well as it turns out we did,
so we braved the rain and went body surfing in the waves. At night we
huddled in the beach shacks eating delicious BBQ Barracuda and chips,
yum yum!
On my birthday we booked to go diving and thankfully the sun appeared for some of the day! The first dive we went on was amazing, we were escorted by Bat Fish for over half the dive, saw a blue spotted ray and a Giant Puffer fish over a meter long! The second dive was the worst dive i think i've ever been on, couldn't even see our hands in front of our faces. Was almost nice swimming along with your eyes closed. Had a fun time on the boat and a nice birthday (thanks for all the birthday messages by the way!)
We caught a bus back up to Phomn Penh where we checked in to 'Top Banana' guesthouse, which was with in walking distance of the Laos embassy. Next day we went and applied for our visas, we were told to collect them the next afternoon so we skipped off to check out the sights of Phomn Penh.
We spent the afternoon wondering around the Russian Market, which had corridors stuffed full of stuff. From North Face gear to bamboo place mats, from cheap dvds to chicken heads and from souvenir t-shirts to custom made suits. We both ended up with a traditional checkered Krama scarf. Couldn't really fit anything else in our bags.
We went down to the river for dinner where we went to a Khmer restaurant and had: Spicy frog with peanuts, Mango and dried shrimp salad, Caramalised pork with bamboo shoots and egg, Coconut soup with chicken and pineapple and finally green jelly sweets in condensed milk. Everything was delicious other than the desert which was how i imagine worms dipped in sugar to taste like.
The next day we took a tuk tuk up to the Killing Fields, where Pol Pot executed 17,000 people and where 8,000 skulls are now displayed in a memorial building divided by age and gender. Was hard to imagine the horrors that went on walking round the butterfly filled field, a very different picture 40 years ago.
In the afternoon we went to Tuol Sleng Museum, a high school converted torture prison. We walked around the rooms were people had been held in solitary confiment and in groups. The place was covered in mug shots of people of people as they arrived and once they had been killed. A pretty heavy day.
Phomn Penh is a great city, one of our favourites so far, i think the city liked us too as that night the rain bucketed down, obviously sad we were leaving.
