Worlds largest airport.
The flight was long. I would say that it was the toughest plane ride thus far; i had trouble sleeping, and every moment slowly crept past. I made the mistake of checking the flight path/ details channel on the TV far too early.
Coming into our approach, the pilot informed us of our arrival time; some 2 hours late. I had already missed my scheduled connecting flight.
Into Heathrow; I wasn't entirely sure of my options. Checking my luggage tags, I either had to pass through immigration, collect my baggage and then go through to a standby counter or head straight to the connections area and ask if British Airways can re-route my bags to Barcelona.
I chose the latter, I chose wrong. A British Airways woman told me I needed to collect my bags and head through immigration. The next flight was looming at 16:45. I didn't have time for this. The queue snaked and coiled it's way through the battered and dated immigration area. I joined.
Through immigration; in the arrivals terminal. Back into the departures terminal I go. Ground staff are polite to tell me of my slim chances due to the heavy loading. I list my name. I wait.
Things take a pleasant surprise as they try and locate a passenger. "No sign of them, it's too late" the girl behind the teller whispers into the phone.
Quizzed whether I would mind a jump seat; I swiftly inform them that I would be happy with the floor if available. Boarding Pass printing for flight BA486 departing London Heathrow for Barcelona. Win.
Manage to grab a paper while I wait to board the plane. I thought I was four hours from Barcelona. I thought wrong.
We boarded, scheduled for an on time service. The pilots voice cracked over the intercom as he informed us that engineers were verifying the integrity of the plane and we would be 20 minutes late. They suspect the plane was hit by lightning on its previous voyage. Comforting.
It wasn't 20 minutes, it was 90. The pilot stringed us along, providing updates and more broken promises. I have had a bad run on my journey en route to Barcelona. I finally arrived in Barcelona. Late. Very late.
