As we drove from Vientiane to Vang Viang the scenery changed a lot. It went from big city to tropical rainforest within an hour. It was so pretty.
We arrived at what you could describe as a small village in the middle of absolutly nowhere! Surrounded by dramatic mountains covered in lush rainforest. And it was so hot, the sky was clear from clouds, so we needed to find somewhere for a drink quick. I had travelled up with Sofie and Anna, they had become quite good travelling companions, as they seemed to be following the same route so far.
We found a room, and it was the nicest so far. My bed was so big, you could have fit 3 people in it! Its funny, when you travel alone, you end up paying more that when you share with 2 or 3 people, but you get so much more space, as they rarley have single rooms!
Unfortunatly even though we were in the middle of nowhere, it seemed the most touristy place so far. All the resturants seemed to sell the same food, catering mostly for 'westerners' serving traditional english breakfast and showing repeat episodes of friends and family guy. In a way, it became a nice change as I had started to miss stuff from home, but it was a shame such a nice place had turned into this.
We decided to go on a kayaking and tubing tour the next day. The kayaking was really nice, slowly floating down the river taking in all the scenery. This is where I met another Paul, he was from Holland, living in Spain. (We realised this guy was some kind of millionaire when we met him in a bar after the tour. He kept buying us drinks!) We also went tubing, this is where some local genius decided to rent out tractor inner tubes to silly foreigners to float down river on. We went into some caves pulling ourselves along with ropes. We went in about 2kilometers i'm told, scary how dark it got when the torches were turned off.
As you got further down the river, you turned a corner, and there were bars linning the riverside, blasting out load music, serving cold beers and special 'happy drinks'. Again, it just reminded me of some resort in spain or something. Nice, but not really what I came for. We ended up stopping anyway, and I had a go on the rope swing into the river, was good fun.
That night Sofie, Anna, Paul and myself went for dinner together. As we were leaving, we saw the biggest bug ever stuck to Sofies sandle. Mingin.
The next day it was time to leave, I think maybe I spent to much time at the begining, there was a lot of ground to be made up.
