Luang Prabang is classified as a 'World Heritage City' which is great, because it seems to have kept all its old buildings and no-one is allowed to build any big modern buildings. I have to say I did like the place a lot.
Our first day there, we decided to go on a boat trip to see the budda caves and whisky village. First we stopped at the whisky, and I have to say, im not sure what I was expecting, but when we got there, I was a little dissapointed. Mostly it was a village of stall trying to sell me a scalf or something. The actual whisky making part was a big tin pot being heated from underneath, with a funnel running out of it, into another pot. That was it. Funnily enough I didnt buy any, but was told by a local, that it tastes great, especially when eaten with dog, and did I want to try some. Im sure you can guess the answer. Then we were off the the budda caves. This was a facinating place, just a big cave, stuck in the side of the cliff absolutley full of budda statues. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of them of all ages and conditions.
That night, and infact every night I stayed in Luang Prabang, I went to the night market. What a WICKED market!!! Unfortunatly I did sped far too much, but everything is so cheap. I bought a quilt cover set for back home (sad I know) but with pillows, it only cost 8 quid!!! Hand made, hand weaved and everything. The only down side was I couldnt possibly get it in my bag to bring it home. This only dawned on me when I got it back to my room, and I had to therefore post it home, costing my another 12 quid! How anoying.
Also in the centre of town there was a temple on a hill. It sounded like a good idea before I set off - great views, impressive temple etc. I was knackered! I discovered just how unfit I am. In fact, I could have opened a swimming pool with the amount of sweat I shed that day. Nice. That said, when I did reach the top, the views were indeed impressive, and it made it all worth it.
My last night in Luang Prabang was also my last night with Anna and Sofie. They were going further north of Laos to go trekking, I was going west to Pakbeng and accross to the Thai border. We treated ourselves to a few beers and said our goodbyes. We hoped to meet up again in Bangkok in a few days, or failing that, the full moon party in Koh Pha Ngan.
