For the first and only time in Vietnam I didn't have to get a sleeper bus to my next destination as hoi an was a 3 hour drive from hue. I arrived around 1.30pm and checked into a homestay Tasso was staying at, unfortunately was just fans instead of air con so it got pretty hot, but we were top floor so we could sit on the seats on the roof with a few beers at night watching the sun come down.
Hoi an itself is a pretty nice town, probably the most peaceful place in Vietnam, doesn't mean it wasn't busy though. The main attraction for westerners here is that this town is renowned for its tailor made suits which can cost you buttons and at a high quality. So you would get hustled on the street to gets suit as well as the normal motorbikes, taxi and random stupid souvenirs they would flog.
It was the middle of one of the festivals when we turned up so during the day everything was getting set up which looked pretty cool but never managed to catch it at night time when it was on. During the day the town has a nice vibe as it feels a lot more relaxed and with the cool little cafes and tailor shops and restaurants it was a nice place to chill out and enjoy.
Hanging around with Tasso was also helping me try the local cuisine because it was so cheap you could live off 5 dollars a day for two meals, water and a coffee. Eating pho bo, which is a beef noodle soup, of pho ga which is the chicken version, or com ga which is chicken and rice. Few other things I've tried but I dunno how to pronounce them. But they love putting veggies in your meal, I normally work around the veggies but sometimes they'll come over thinking you don't know how to eat it so they come over and mix everything up for you which can be annoying.
its also a sweet experience sitting on little plastic chairs and tables which you would normally associate with what kids would use, even funnier that your sitting in the pavement or on the road or a back alley.
Just a short stop of two full days there and then it was off to nha trang
