We arrived in Colonia yesterday checked into outer hotel - The Rovio after a reminder that we all have too much stuff (the 500m walk felt like 5km). Next was a short walk around town to figure out where everything was and a delicious civito lunch. A civito is basically a hamburger bun with a thin piece of steak, ham, cheese, egg and salad and is thoroughly delicious. After lunch Mick (Aussie), Nella (Pom and my room mate), Harriet (Pom) and I all hired a little golf buggy and went for a cruise. We drove out of town along the coast to an abandoned bull ring. Along the way we found this statue of a woman which I thought was religious until we saw the bottle (with full glass) of wine, and fruit and things left as offerings. A tad strange on the side of the road. The beaches were busy and although it's quite hot the brown muddy water wasn't overly inviting to us. Back in town we laughed as we navigated cobblestone streets, drove the wrong way down lanes, and got glared at by police for doing u turns where we shouldn't. We stopped for cocktails by the water and climbed a lighthouse. All in all a lot of fun for a total of $28 US between 4 of us!
Last night we met up with Mike's group for dinner. We had pre ordered but unfortunately the grill was off the menu so I ended up having pumpkin ravioli with leek sauce. Was fine at the time but I later regretted it. After dinner we moved into the bar area for drinks and to play a game called Sapo. Sapo involves throwing 6 coins onto a table with various holes in the top. The coins drop through the holes (if you're lucky) and fall into slots with different values depending on the position of the holes. There are also 3 raised targets - a slotted wheel (worth 150 if the coin spins through it into the hole underneath), a frog (worth 600 if you get the coin in its mouth) and a face (worth 800 if you get the coin through its narrow awkwardly angled mouth).
It was decided that 4 of us would play Aussies vs kiwis. With Mick and I up against Mike and a guy from his group who's name I forget. There was much bantering and sledging but noone was more surprised than me when I was the first to get a frogs mouth. You could have knocked me over with a feather (not to mention the look on the other guys faces) when I landed another frogs mouth with the very next coin!!! Needless to say we started to draw a crowd then and my skills quickly plummeted. Luckily though Micks improved and we managed to trounce the kiwis by over 3000 points in the 6 rounds. (the froggy double was never repeated though. )
Unfortunately by around midnight I was starting to feel queasy so I headed back to the hotel. Nella got in around 5.30 this morning after hitting a club with a bunch of them. Apparently there was quite a good reggae band playing and I'm spewing I missed it. I couldn't face breakfast either this morning but hopefully after the 3 hour bus ride I'll be fine again. I'm looking forward to the BBQ place!
