WOOHOO What a fantastic day!!! This is what I came here for! We met our local guide, Alex this morning and headed to the Argentinean side of Iguazu Falls. Iguazu means "big water" and they are not wrong! There are around 280 waterfalls in this complex of falls. We entered the park and booked our trip on the speed boat, but had a couple of hours before our boat left so we headed straight up to Devils Throat - the mouth of the biggest fall. The park is so huge, we walked along designated paths with names like "the green trail". There I came across my first coati - a possum sized fluffy rodent looking thing... kind of like a cross between a bandicoot and a possum. They were everywhere and quite happy to climb up onto your bag if they suspect there is food in it. Obviously they are eating plenty as they are breeding like rabbits - we saw loads of babies!
After the green trail we boarded the train (yes the park has a train and its quite long too!) and headed up to Devils Throat station. Then it was a walk along a series of walkways and bridges (stopping to take photos of the picturesque calm waterways and tiny little rapids) and then we arrived! Its hard to describe the feeling of coming to devils throat for the first time. Its awe inspiring. Loads of people crowd the viewing platform trying to get photos of themselves - there are even guys with little stepladders who will take your photo for you (for a fee of course). Once you can fight your way the the rails though the falls are beautiful! Its hard to comprehend how such powerful falls can thunder down from what seems to be a gentle slow flowing river. Somehow they manage though, and even though there wasnt enough water/wind for us to get sprayed we could still hear and experience the power.
We then headed down for our boat ride. It started with a jeep journey through the rainforest/jungle. In all honesty this bit was a waste of time and money - if I went again I would just do the "Nautical Adventure" rather than the "Great Adventure". At the end of the jeep tour, we walked down a muddy path (quite funny watching the people in their pristine white Sheraton hotel slippers) and donned our life jackets and grabbed our waterproof bags ready to hit the water! We boarded the boat and took a short cruise up the river to the base of the falls. The first pass was photographic opportunities for the unique view from underneath the falls. Then the call came to stow cameras in our waterproof bags, and we headed into the water! It was impossible to keep your eyes open with the force of the spray in your face. We didnt actually pass under the falls - they were too strong for that, but we did get absolutely drenched by spray. Laughing and cheering and squeeling as we went. I did attempt some video with my waterproof camera but you cant see too much other than water! We did get a copy of the professional video taken at the time so hopefully that will show a bit more. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and I loved every second of it!
After the boat ride, we walked the Upper trail and Lower Trail. We had to do them pretty quickly as we were a little behind schedule but we couldnt help stopping frequently to admire the beauty surrounding us. At one point there was even a rainbow over the falls which was just magical. All to soon though it was time to leave the park and board the bus for the crossing into Brazil. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my last day in Argentina!
