I was woken up this morning by a guy from the hotel opening the room to show some people in (I wasn't supposed to be in there). Luckily he didn't tell me off and I just carried on sleeping. I got up at about 8.30am and went back to our room to get ready. A mixture of the heat, lack of sleep, and the cheap whiskey nightcap meant I was feeling really rough!
We headed to Sozo, where we went yesterday, for breakfast, where
I drank as much water as possible and had a tomato and cheddar bagel - I miss cheese so it was good.
A minivan came to get us from our hotel at 11.30am to take us to our bus. It took us on a long journey but we ended up just around the corner!
The bus to Phnom Penh was ok, better than some we've been on. We had to give our passports to the conductor with $25 for a visa as soon as we got on. I don't really like parting with my passport but we had no choice!
After two hours we got to the Cambodia - Vietnam border where we had to get off and get out big bags from the hold to have them scanned.
Our names were called and we collected our passports (I was Charlottay) and got back on the bus, only to have our passports taken away again. We drove about 200 metres and had to get off the bus again. I used the loo because I was desperate, but they tried to charge me. They were filthy so I just walked past without paying because my passport was ready. I felt a bit bad but I didn't have any change and I had already parted with $25 for a visa.
Back on the bus again I fell asleep for most of the journey to Phnom Penh. I only woke up a few times, and when I did the scenery was really nice. One time I woke up we were on a ferry which was really confusing! We stopped at a service station for some lunch. They are all open air here with a canteen style choice of food. I didn't fancy any meat from the dirty open air stand, so I ordered noodles on their own. They were cold and tasted funny so I covered them in what I thought was soy sauce, but it turned out to be fish sauce! I despise fish so after one mouthful I very nearly vomited, and I bought some BBQ flavour Mister Potato Crisps (Pringles to you and me) and had those instead - much safer!
We arrived in Phnom Penh at 6pm ish, and when we got off the bus we were greeted by dozens of men shouting 'lady!! You want Tuk yuk!? Lady!!' - it is annoying at the best of times but even more so after a 6 hour journey. We did get in a Tuk Tuk and he drove us to a cheap guesthouse a few streets from the river. It is $12 for the room so we didn't bother looking anywhere else. We have arranged for the Tuk Tuk driver to meet us here at 7am to take us to the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Museum for $4 each. Our bus to Siem Reap tomorrow is at 1pm so we need to sightsee early. We dumped our bags and headed towards the riverfront to get some food. The city has no streetlights and is filthy and busy, but when you reach the riverfront it is suddenly like a Mediterranean beach resort with swanky bars and restaurants with a huge palm tree lined promenade. The restaurants are almost Western prices which is really, really expensive here. We found a slightly cheaper place but I still spent almost £5!
After a stroll along the riverfront, where we saw some Cambodians doing some street dancing. The choreography was really bad and they looked really shy and awkward, but it was sweet. We also noticed that all the bins are shaped like cauldrons.
We got back to our room, which is basic but fine, at about 8.45pm and I showered. It's only 10pm now but we need to be up at 6am so I'm going to get some sleep!
