Cordoba was my first taste of southern Spain. I love southern Spain for a lot of reasons. It had a wonderful, interesting mixture of cultures, the weather was warm and mild, and it felt less touristy. I wish I had chosen to visit Granada rather than Cordoba because everyone I talked to said that Granada was their favorite city in Spain, but I enjoyed visiting the Mezquita. If you're going to Cordoba, I recommend doing a day trip or even staying one night and just seeing the Mezquita. It's the main attraction in the small town. The is a Synagoge, but it's small and not very impressive.
I stayed in the Senses & Colours Añil Hostel for two nights and I was a mess because of construction. Apparently there was a nicer Senses & Colours hostel a few blocks from the one I stayed in, but I didn't realize. The one I stayed in was run like a business which I didn't like. I felt more comfortable and welcomed in privately owned hostels. Because the Senses & Colours Añil Hostel is part of a chain they kept a professional distance.
At first I was alone in my room. I tried to feel excited about having some privacy but I just felt sad and lonely. Surprisingly, I got two roommates rather late at night. Cassie was an Aussie traveling the world for a year and Brenden was an Irish journalist on holiday. I haven't talked to Cassie since I've been home, but Brenden and I have had a bit of communication.
Cordoba was a great city to visit. I loved the mix of Muslim and Catholic influences and the Mediterranean vibe of the city. I didn't like how early the city shut down or how small it was (if it wasn't for Cassie and Brenden I would have been completely bored). It was a great little city, definitely worth a day trip, but I think I would have enjoyed Granada a little bit more.
