Evening all,
So ive been in Cairo almost 2 weeks now, its FLOWN by. I still havent got around to doing the whole touristy thing yet, ive mainly been networking! Ive met a bunch of family members who i dont really know and been spending time with my friends here. By "spending time" i obviously mean "getting drunk".
Its pretty amusing how things work here, what with there being no rules an all. Getting drinks from an off licence usually involves driving to the shop and honking your horn from outside until they bring you some beer. Its pretty much drive through alcohol. And it amuses me somewhat to see the driver cracking open a bottle of beer and swiging it WHILE driving.
Beer isnt cheap but almost everything else is. The hotel im currently staying in costs 40 egyptian pounds per night, which is less than 4 of our English pounds. I am also thinking of going to a hotel which costs 25 egyptian pounds (around 2.50 in England), which is silly money really. The other day we got 2 fuul sandwhiches and 2 taamiya (like falafel) sanwhiches, and 2 bottles of water and it came to 1.70 english pounds. So bargainous!
I said before that I hadnt got around to much touristy stuff yet, and while that is true, I did manage to pop down to Giza to see the only remaining mouments of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. They are as awesome and spectacular as you would expect. They are HUGE. Absolutely enormous. My ancestors did well! Check out the pics of them, but there will be more over the next couple of weeks. I need to go back because the weather spoilt this trip. It absolutely pelted it down with rain and none of us were appropriately dressed. So we got to see the big 3 but I still havent seen the Sphynx, and I havent gone to the smaller pyramids at Saqqara and Dahshur yet either. And next time I go Im going to try to actually go inside them, spooky!
In other news Im getting closer to finding a job here teaching english. So all is well on that front. I have an interview tomorrow and we;ll see where that takes me.
Speaking of which, I should be preparing for that now rather than rambling on here. So adios for now, stay in touch.
