Ok so today's challenge was to get from St Denis, where I flew in, to St Gilles les Bains, where I'm spending the majority of my time at a beach resort. After refusing to pay 80 Euros for a transfer I decided to get the bus. I got a cab down to the bus station and got on a bus for St. Gill as I asked the bus driver. The greatest peril with catching a bus in a foreign destination is of course knowing when to get off, closely followed by how to make the driver stop and let you off. I discovered that if you want to make the bus stop here, you clap your hands loudly twice and the driver will stop for you. Easy.
Second dilemma not so easy, I got off the bus at the first sign for St Gilles les Bains, unfortunately no where near where I am staying, in the scorching heat. I walked for around half an hour in the heat with my heavy suitcase. (Never again, by the way with the suitcase! From now on its backpack or bust!) Luckily two lovely French people stopped to give me a lift, they even gave me a short tour of the area! Yay for dumb luck!
I checked into the Novotel and had a welcome cocktail. I went up to my room and immediately got into my swimmers and headed for the pool. I sun baked for a while before heading for the private beach, which was much better as the water was actually cool.
After getting a bit burnt I went back to my room for a shower and then went out exploring. There really wasn't much to see as it was new years day and everything was closed. I did managed to find a better beach, think I will give that a go tomorrow. I didn't manage to find food, so I decided to treat myself to dinner at the hotel, which came in at a whopping 32 Euros. Won't be doing that again in a hurry!
