After breakfast this morning and a few sore heads, we went to visit the local Mongolian family. I was pleased to find that the lady of the house had actually made us a spread of Mongolian breakfast food which was really nice.
The group asked lots of questions and after the little boy who lived there took us out the back to meet his little calf. He kept trying to make the tiny cow stand up, by pulling on it's lead, but the animal would have none of it. The boy wouldn't give up and finally, to our relief the calf finally did stand up and some of us patted him.
We then got back on the bus and drove back to Ulaanbaatar, on the way the bus got a flat tyre, so the driver dropped us at a nearby supermarket and went off to fix the tyre. I had flashed of Turkish bus drivers leaving me and the group stranded at the petrol station, because said petrol station didn't have the right kind of petrol, so he had driven to another on….without telling me.
The driver got back and we checked back into the hotel and had the rest of the day to ourselves. I ran around trying to organise a present for Nat for her birthday party tonight, I ended up getting her a stuffed camel with a pink saddle. I had organised a cultural show for tonight and needed to get everyone down there, I didn't really know where I was supposed to go, so I went there after getting Nat's present so that I would know for later. Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted.
The show was a 6pm, so at 5:15pm I met everyone at the hotel and walked them back down to the Cultural Show. The show was really cool, finally got to see Mongolian throat singing and the contortionist, who managed to hold herself in a hand stand position with her feet over her head, using her mouth. There was also a band which played traditional music who were very good, especially one lady on a Mongolian harp, the way her fingers ran over the instrument, you could see the emotion she felt and how much she loved what she was doing.
After the show, we headed off to the restaurant for Nat's birthday, I had steak stuffed with spinach and cheese, sounds weird, but actually really good. Otgon, had forgotten to get the cake, so I ended up having to buy a piece of cake from the restaurant…. not ideal, but better than nothing. I also had to walk back to the table with it, singing happy birthday. Embarrassing, but appreciated. After I had finished and had given Nat her camel and birthday card, the staff at the restaurant brought her another cake and sang happy birthday…..annoying.
We all went back to the hotel at about 10pm, no karaoke tonight owing to the night of drinking in the Ger the night before.
