I organized today, and it was one of the best days on the trip. I organized for us to have a private driver for the day, who turned up to take us around to the final things we hadn't seen.
Our first stop was a place called Kertagosa, or Justice Hall in Indonesian. This is a temple surrounded by a moat, with huge, colourful waterlillies in it. The ceiling of the temple has depictions of punishments in hell for certain sins painted on it. One of the punishments, for terrorism, was to be boiled alive! It was raining slightly and this made the atmosphere amazing, there were also some men in another building playing a xylophone and incense burning in another small shrine.
After we had finished at Kertagosa, we went out into the street and found our driver Wayan, we then set off for Goa Gajah or the Elephant cave. We had to climb down a few flights of stairs and rush through a rather large souvenir area to get to it. There was a pool being filled by stone maidens, which was once thought to have been the fountain of youth. I went down and stuck my hands on the water. Behind that was a cave, with the entrance carved in the shape of a demons face. The entrance of the cave was the demons mouth. Inside was a statue of the Hindu god Ganesh and incense burning and offerings placed in front of him.
We climbed back up to the car and drove on to the Monkey forest. We entered the forest, walked a short way in and were pretty much surrounded my small makak monkeys. Other people fed them and were constantly harassed by the animals, I was glad I hadn't bought any of the food out the front for them. We went into the temple and put on our sarongs that we had brought with us. The men out the front were handing out green sarongs. I soon fund out why. I sat on a step just inside the temple gate to watch the monkeys playing, with my bright purple sarong with a yellow sash and my colourful bag I got in Morocco.
I was only on the step for a few minutes before a small monkey came and swung up onto my shoulder. He sat there for a while playing with my green top and then jumped down. At which point two other smaller monkey jumped onto my lap and started first playing with my bag and then biting it. I thought it was cute until I realized they were destroying the bag and probably biting my iPhone at which point I remembered the Make yourself look big tactic I had learned in Africa and stood up and the monkeys all scattered.
I stood there watching them for a bit, until they cheekily came back and started playing with my sarong, one even ripped the label off and tried to eat it! Another one grabbed the end and circled me with it, trying to tie me up.
We left the temple and went for a walk, there was another large monkey perched on a pillar near some steps, with his foot stuck out while he was cleaning himself. Mum went up and touched his foot. He didn't like that! He bared his teeth and hissed at Mum. I jumped in front of Mum and made myself look big and the animal backed off.
The jungle itself was beautiful, with stone statues of the Hindu gods everywhere. My favourite was a large statue of a snake, with both stone and real monkeys on its back.
We left the monkey forest and found our driver again, who then took us to Ubud. We had lunch in Ubud and went to the markets there. I bought a beautiful ceremonial sword, the one they use in the Barong dance.
After Ubud, we went off to Tanah Lot, supposed to be the most magnificent temple on the island. I really didn't think that much of it. The temple is a bit like Saint Michaels mount. Its on a rocky outcrop that is surrounded by the sea when the tide comes in and can be reached on foot when the tide goes out. It was very pretty, but surrounded by multitudes of tourists, and well, I'm spoilt and don't like to share.
We had a look at the temple and then went shopping in the rather large bazaar, though not before I had managed to find a family with a HUGE python. It was the biggest snake I had ever seen in my life and it was so heavy! I had my picture taken with it, and surprisingly so did Mum, who looks like she is about to scream in the photo. So funny. The family then brought over a large Iguana for me to play with. He was bright green and about as long as my arm, a truly beautiful creature. There was also a flying fox in the tree and I was trying to have a photo with him, but he kept trying to latch onto me. Feeling the love from the wildlife today.
We the did some shopping, I bought a samurai sword and a blow gun, I am now ready to experience Denpasar International Airport armed to the teeth. After our shopping we were taken back to the hotel, we had to pay Wayan 600 000 rupiah for the day, which is about $55, not a bad rate for a private chauffeur. We gave him an extra hundred thousand as he had been really good. We then had a lovely dinner at the hotel again and Mum went off to bed. I sat by the pool writing until I could no longer stand the mosquitoes buzzing all around me.
