This place is like nowhere else we have been in Australia! it’s a really alternative and super chilled out little town, which is probably why we liked it here so much. Although it’s a got a little too much of a hippy vibe, but that’s what makes it what it is. We stayed in Byron Bay for 7 nights all together and just planned to relax for the whole week.
Byron Bay has very good surfing spots and is very popular with surfers, so Phil made the most of his final week of surfing in Australia. Even though we spent most of the week doing a whole lot of nothing, we did manage to fit in a few activities.
We took a trip out onto the ocean doing a spot of sea kayaking. While we were out we were lucky enough to see 4 whales which were migrating north up to the Fraser Island area in order to give birth. Our guide told us they come into Byron Bay for a rest on their way up from the Antarctic. We also saw a pod of dolphins that hung around our kayaks for a while playing. Although we have both been kayaking before, it was the first time for both of us on a sea kayak. It was pretty crazy trying to get out through the waves, but once that part was over it was an awesome experience. It was really hard work, so we were both very tired afterwards. (Phil more than Rhi as he did most of the paddling).
A few days later we walked up to the lighthouse in Byron Bay. This is Australia’s most easterly point, and apparently has amazing views of the sunrise, however 6am was slightly too early for us! it’s a really nice walk up there and when we got to the lighthouse we saw some more migrating whales in the distance.
We had a great week in Byron, and it was nice to just chill out before a busy few days in Sydney. We left Australia for the USA on July 2nd. We were really sad to leave as we have had such an amazing time over the last 6 months, but at the same we were very excited to head to Hawaii!
