We arrived in shanghai at around 13:00 and checked in to the City Central Youth Hostel, showered and then headed straight out for lunch and a walk around the city. The sun was finally shining today so out came the shorts. Roy took us to a small local restaurant just around the corner from the hostel and I had Beef noodles for 15 Yuan which was delicious, whereas most other people had won ton soup and where very disappointed with theirs. After being on the train for 17 hours most people were starving and the soup didn't really fill anyone up, especially Craig who was, as he put it, very grumpy when he doesn’t get fed properly....sound like anyone you know?
Soon after stepping off the underground train and exiting the station, we were just taking some photos of the city skyline and we started to draw a crowd again. People were asking to take our photos and pose with us, especially the blonde girls again.
We had one of Roy’s whirlwind tours of the city, including all the major sights, a ferry across the river and a visit to the Yuyang Gardens (which were closed when we got there). He must have walked us around for nearly 5 hours. At least we got to get a good insight in to the city and we decided we would head back to the Yuyang Gardens another day when it’s open.
I was beginning to regret the options of shorts today as we went straight from walking around the city to the theatre, were we saw the famous Shanghai Acrobats in action. The most memorable part of the show was this one guy who was balancing on a platform flipping rice bowls in to the air and catching them on his head, he was quite a character.
After the show we were once again marched around the city, trying to find a bus stop that would take us back to the hostel. Walking around the city in shorts at 10pm is not my idea of fun, so we all decided to grab the nearest taxi and get back to the hostel as quick as we could.
