Punta del Diablo is a laid back beach town on the northern coast of Uruguay. The town is small, just a handful of shops and snack shacks, but it has a stunning coastline with pristine beaches and that's why we were there. We had a very relaxing couple of days going to the beach, reading our books and generally doing very little.
Our next destination was Foz Do Iguaçu, where we would visit the stunning Iguaçu waterfalls. But this is in Brazil and to get there from Punta del Diablo we would face a challenging 24hr schedule of 3 buses, 2 taxis, a flight and a border crossing which is renowned for being tricky. It all had to fit together like clockwork. Our first bus would take us to the Uruguayan immigration office to get our exit stamps, but only a few buses leave Punta del Diablo each day.
When we got to the bus stop (10mins early), to our horror, the bus had already pulled away and was disappearing down the street! Before we knew what was happening, our hostel manager was chasing the bus in his pickup truck, with us in the back trying not to get flung out on to the road! The chase was on, but the bus didn't seem to notice us flashing our lights, waving our arms and honking our horn. After what seemed like forever, the bus eventually pulled over, only for us to find it was the wrong bus! All that chaos for nothing, but of cause this means the RIGHT bus would be back at the bus stop and leaving any minute! We jumped back into the pickup and raced back to where we started. Luckily, we hadn't missed it, in fact, it was running late. We waited and waited, with every passing minute being a step closer to our tight travel plan falling apart. Finally after waiting an hour the bus arrived (just in time) and we were on our way. After a rocky start to a very challenging travel day, the rest of the plans went without a hitch and 24hrs later we were at Foz Do Iguaçu, the gateway to the amazing Iguaçu waterfalls.
