First of all, I'd like to say that I'm going to come out looking pretty bad after this entry.I'll show a lack of compassion, selfishness and overall preciousness but I have to tell it like it is, so here goes.
We left Rob in the Bangkok airport feeling quite melancholy and Antony was still feeling ill but we knew that we were back on the road (well, in the sky). Months ago I mentioned to Antony that it would be a good idea to book a hotel in Singapore since we were going to be there in mid-December and it was bound to attract Xmas shoppers.Since then I have relaxed and began to believe that we would be perfectly fine without a reservation, so we arrived without one. With our packs on our backs we began walking around hostels reliving the famous Christmas story where there was no room at the inn.Three hours later and dripping with sweat from the humidity, we checked into the hotel in Little India that I had almost booked months previous but didn't because I thought it was too expensive and now paying a higher price to boot!I guess we did fall on our feet, but this time it hurt a bit.But the old me is back, booking up rental cars and hostels in Australia.
This rude introduction to Singapore put me in a bad mood that I couldn't shake.I don't know why this came on when it did, perhaps Rob leaving for the UK or the fact that Singapore is decked out for Christmas and this makes me homesick.Either of these could be true, but I think that the primary reason for my funk was that Antony was still sick which meant I wasn't having any fun (I told you this wasn't going to be nice). This is reminiscent of a time when I blamed my sister for ruining a family holiday to Disneyland because she was crying from pain in her neck. Sensitivity mustn't be my forte.Anyway, it had been about a week since Antony began to feel poorly and all of my caring and concern had run dry and I just wanted him to be normal again.Being the nice guy that he is, he tried to see the sights with me and we went out shopping, went to the cinema (The Golden Compass, if you're curious) and spent an afternoon at the excellent Singapore Zoo but this all ended with a visit to the doctor. The doctor gave him four different pills and tonics to take and said that he had to stay away from spicy foods. Moments later, Antony is sitting across from me at a street Indian food café watching me eat perhaps the best curry of my life with only a cup-o-noodle to look forward constituting his own dinner.Again, my cruelty is shocking.
On our last day in Singapore I tried to redeem myself by hunting for a replacement button for a pair of Antony's shorts while he rested. An hour later I came back with the single button, repaired the shorts and then demanded we went to Raffles. On the way we stopped by the largest fountain in the world, the "Fountain of Wealth."I must admit that I'm sure I have seen bigger fountains and I didn't feel any richer looking it at, so it was a bit lost on me. Raffles, on the other hand, was not a disappointment. It was beautifully decorated for Christmas and we were so pleased to be there, Antony even suffered through a Singapore Sling.
This led us to the airport and on a flight to our next adventure in Australia. Goodbye Asia, Hello Aussies!
Love, Rachelle & Antony
