The Garden Route and the Wild Coast were absolutely amazing. We wish we had made more time for this area. Cath and I got around on the Baz Bus which was a hop on hop off service between backpackers - very convenient!
First stop - Oudtshoorn. This town is in the ostrich farm region. Very strange seeing wobbles of ostriches in paddocks rather than cows! We visited the Cango Caves and did the 'adventure' tour. It got very tight at times trying to crawl through tiny holes and spaces. When then visited a ostrich farm and had a go riding one. Quite a funny experience - they blindfold the ostrich while you hop on then remove the blindfold and the ostrich takes off! Luckily guys run behind to catch you! We cycled through the farms back to the backpackers for an ostrich steak for dinner! Yummy. The next day we went quad biking up to beautiful falls. Awesome fun with some great views of the mountains. We then went abseiling on the way back. This was the first time I've done this so I was very scared but really enjoyed it and had a second go. Cath was a natural!!!
We then visited Knysna, a little town on an estruary. Took a ferry to the heads and wandered around the waterfront.
Next stop Jeffery's Bay - surfing mecca of South Africa. Spent a few days here lying on the beach, checking out the surf shops and trying to surf! Had a great 2 hour lesson and managed to stand up a few times. Checked out the supertubes and also the local talent... hmmm
After J Bay we had a night in Port Elizabeth and then went to Chintsa on the wild coast. There was a beautiful beach and lagoon here. Our backpackers had a beautiful view. The weather wasn't that great but we kicked back and relaxed. Free wine at 4pm everyday... ended up having a few shots too!
We headed up to Durban next and Cath and I went out seperate ways. I spent a few days catching up with the relatives and Cath went on to Lesotho!
Totally recommend the Garden Route - there were so many places we had to skip! Will definately be going back!
