LAKE NATIMUK- MT ARAPILES
From the lookout at Mt. Zero we noticed this solitary mountain in the west, which almost appeared like an island amidst the dry sandy lowlands laid out before us- never heard of it so decided to go there. We later learned Mt. Arapiles ( a-rap-il-eze), was infact an island 20million yrs ago, the sea went all the way up to echuca and mildura. As you walk around the base of this beautiful piece of rock, you can see the evidence of where the waves have tirelessly left their mark. Which creates a grand playground, as it is one of THE places in the world for climbers. 1200 climbs are available to be attempted- if you are passionate about crawling up massive granite and sandstone rocks faces. For those whose mountain goat skills are not quiet up to scratch, or who are still holding onto their fear of heights and death- 'Bouldering' a somewhat less intimidating alternative, although, looks can be deceiving- climbing 3m off the ground, then trying to figure out HOW TO GET DOWN, was enough for me!! Seriously though, it was inspiring to watch these guys and girls, doing what they love- scaling the walls like spiderman, with no ropes, just them, their chalk bag, their trust and their desire- 'twas awesome!!! We humans can experience amazing things when FEAR is not the oppressor...
We made camp at Natimuk Lake, took the bikes out for a spin- 20km we thought was pretty good, til we witnessed this young guy seemingly effortlessly scamper 300m up the face just before sunset- reality check!!
We then walked to the summit and watched the sunset- pics aren't great unfortunately, our camera is not so flash when the light is changing. (see album).
