We arrived at the appropriately named Hostal al Fin del Mundo in Punta Arenas. I say appropriately named because it looked like a bomb hit it - breakfast stuff was everywhere and it was 230PM. It took a while for the guy there to get our room ready and it had the district smell of Haze when he was finished.
Punta Arenas is not very big and it doesn't have a lot to do on a regular day, so you can imagine how dead it was on a Sunday. It mostly exists, for tourists anyway, as a stopping off point on the way to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world and the departure point for ships to Antartica. We explored a bit, saw the fish market, got our bus tickets and found a place that was still open and serving food.
We did find a chocolate shop, La Chocolatta where we all decided to sample the wares. They served one of the nicest hot chocolates I've ever had.
As it was our last night together, there had to be rum involved. A few beers around the pool table got us started and a chat with the hostels night shift guy meant there was no point heading out in a small Chilean town on a Sunday night. So there was a walk to the off license instead, which turned into a sprint as it closed, which somehow I managed to lead even though I was I flip flops. For a good five minutes it seemed like that sprint wasnt good enough, as it had closed, but some of Callanan's best Spanish managed to tell the guy it was our last night in South America (only a half lie) which convinced him to sell us the rum.
Monday morning gave us insight as to why the place was such a mess when we arrived - breakfast is served at whatever time you want. Fortunate for the state we were in.
Sean's send off was a greasy lunch at Lomits, classic Chilean food if ever there was any. Then he was off, on a flight to New Zealand via Santiago. There were goodbyes and hugs, the wolfpack broken up, at least temporarily until our planned meet up in Australia. Leaving Callanan and I to cook dinner in a bad kitchen and use the hostels one sellable feature - a massive DVD collection.
