We arrived in Bangkok early in the morning after 14 hours worth of flying. The flights weren't too bad and Qatar is an excellent airline with the best in flight entertainment i've ever had. Star Trek-8/10 Bullit-6/10 (very disappointed) Outnumbered and Kath And Kim were on top form as usual.
Anyway after a short taxi ride we arrived at Kieran and Jordan's uncles luxary apartment, which is incredible. Based in a hotel complete with a pool, gym and driving range it is the definition of 5 star accomodation. Many times I felt like I was in Lost In Translation (Ste and Leanne that doesn't mean I now like the film, it still sucks). Colin and Pamela are saints for letting us stay. I knew I was in good company aswell when the first thing Uncle Colin said to me was 'I'm surprised you still came, you're sleeping on the balcony with no bed!'
After a quick quick shower and a change, Oliver (Kieran and Jordans cousin) took us to the mall for something to eat and then we headed to the Grand Palace. Here we saw plenty of halls and monuments including The Temple Of The Emerald Buddha. Sitting behind the praying monks we relaxed and admired the wonderful treasures on show. We then visited the Giant Reclining Buddha and headed back to the apartment. In the evening we visted the Night Bazaar and had something to eat before going to Khao San Road for some drinks and fried insects. Yes thats right, me and Kieran ate fried insects. At 50p a bag it was a offer too good to turn down. We started with a small white centipede-like creature before moving onto our main course: a cricket. To ba fair they just tasted like the mustard and vinegar they were coated in and were a little crunchy. That being said two were enough to prove how hard we are (Jordan is a girl) and take some photos.
Out second day started with a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River and then we went for a tradition Thai massage. Two hours of a little Thai lady bending your limbs in ways you didn't think possible can sometimes be painful but it was worth it. Afterwards i've never felt more relaxed even if the women were buzzing off me because I wasn't sitting up and lying down in the right way. After the massage we took a trip to the Thai boxing on motorbike taxis (the best form of transport ever and the only way I want to travel when I get home) and watched skinny guys beat eachother up all night. We sat in the cheap seats which were a great view, not the top balcony at Goodison the assistant lead us to believe. When that was over we returned to Khao San Road for a night of heavy drinking which I deeply regretted the next day....
The next day started at 2 in the afternoon with me still feeling a little drunk. We all went to MBK shopping centre for a look around, I passed on the food opting for just a Sprite, saving myself for the evening when I would feel alot better. For tea we went to a restaurant at the top of the road courtesy of Uncle Colin. It looked like the pits but it had the best food I have tasted so far on my trip. Chicken and Cashews, Beef and Lemongrass, Sundried Pork and the less appetizing Grilled Ducks Bill. After food the young-uns went to Patpong to check out Bangkok's notorius 'seedy district'. The trip was a disappointment though. I didnt see any lady-boys (I think) and the brief glimpses into the lap dancing bars showed the most uncomfortable and un-sexy pole dancers i've ever seen. Mum i've only ever seen them on TV I promise and even then I turn over straight away because it's not family viewing. We then had a quick walk down Gay Street before going home.
Out final day in Bangkok was fairly quiet. The first thing I did was buy a phone that makes Naomi's look like a Blackberry. We then headed to Chinatown for some food and my first but definetly not last Sui Mai of this Asian tour ;-) We then went to Limphini park for some pedelo-ing and aerobics before hitting the sacks in preperation for out early rise and journey to Cambodia.
