half the world away
How do!!?? How do!!?? soo been in sao paulo now for about a week(at this point), previously was in Natal which I left coz there wasn't enough things to get on with, funnily enough there is only so much lying on the beach and salsa evenings that stay a novelty and living an hour away from the favella i was workin in didn't give me much to realize, started to feel more like an extended holiday without my mates rather than a contribution and an experience i was hoping for. So i asked the company Experimento who sent me there if i could change location, so they got back to me and said they have a project called "Monte Azul" in Sao Paulo, working and living in a favella , very basic living conditions etc...A few days after i was on a plane to sao paulo, on the way i was thinking `why the f#*k am i leaving a place like Natal the beautiful beaches and ridiculously hot weather everyday for a city?`.. Well anyway got off the plane and all my bags arrived with me too...wow! I was met by a women called Davina from Experimento and she took me to the house i would be staying in near the favella, the house is owned by a lady called Lindalva and many volunteer's stay here from around the world. The first night was really interesting coz i got to meet a few volunteer's and learn about the Monte Azul Comunity Association "MACA". The house is fairly big, lots of different parts for the volunteers to sleep and live, its quite big brotherish coz your just living here with total strangers. Weve got a parot in the back yard that I thought was really cool caoz it talked and imitated whistles and tunes. Two huge guard dogs that are supposidly essential. Graffitti art on the walls and where i live in this house is on the top floor with a few other volunteers, you actually have to climb up a ladder to get to it and we have our own kitchen and the berooms are separated with curtains and you have a bed and shelves ..thats it. All the people are safe, learnin about Japonese culture, origami and that! and there's quite a lot of Germans here too, supposidly they have really good chocolate in Germany, hmmm! Its good for my portuguese here too coz you have to communicate with brazilians everyday at work and its good coz you want to talk to talk to them.
The second night i was here I went out with two of the German girls to watch a show in Sao Paulo and on the way i find out that Oasis aree playin 5minutes from were we live next week, so that was nice to find out. The show was good didn't understand a word of it, but it was interesting to watch.I was lookin forward to gettin my oasis ticket at this point.
The work i do at Monte Azul is mainly in the kitchen or Pardaria "bakery" which is 8am-12pm and then you get an hour brake for lunch and if your lucky you can eat rice and bean's and then at 1pm i rather give guitar lessons for the rest of the day or work in the masenaria which is making chairs and toys ...anything out of wood. Its really hard work but you get a lot out of it and your in the favella so your just constantly learning about the way of life and the way people are. The first few days are pretty intense for any volunteer coming here for the first time, you hear a lot of stories about crime and violence and your recomended not to stay out past 11pm. My first day someone "Jenny" told me about these guys that go round on motorbikes, one drives the other holds the gun and robs you, the 2nd night i was here i went out to a bar and came back home around 12:30 i was walking back alone and was nearly diving over walls everytime i heard a motorbike coming round the corner. Anyway cant be arsed to write anymore at the mo, il update again soon.GOODBYE
