Punakaiki or Pancake rocks is an area of coast where the seaside rocks have beeon worn away to look like stacks of pancakes. There are also some outstanding blowholes which are at their most impressive at high tide. We arrived in the afternoon and gound out that the next high tide wouldn't be until 9pm or 9am the next morning. We had a look around the impressive rocks and surrounding area which is full of interesting rainforest, flax undergrowth as well as wonderfully wild rocks and beach. As the afternoon wore on we found a campsite, and settled ourselves for the evening.
We got back to the pancake rocks by 9.30 the next morning and boy were we glad we'd stayed for high tide. The sun was shining and the seas where high, meaning the blow holes were spectacular! The morning sun shone through all the salt spray in the air making rainbows appear everywhere. We took all our photos and videos over again. Before taking our convoy further north we had a nose around some caves which didn't look much from the entrance but just kept branching off and going further back. We wouldn't have got far without our head torches
