Our last day in Xi'an we were determined to make the most of, so it was off to the city wall first thing to hire a bike. Sjofn was with us and we were soon on top of the ancient wall and riding our bikes of choice. Paul and I went for a tandem which was a first for both of us but looked like it would be fun. We had pretty good views over the city, particularly the inner, older part as the building here is restricted to certain heights and it contains the majority of the older more attractive buildings. Our views also included a strip of park land running along the outside of the southern wall and we were treated to the usual dancing and tai chi practicing locals. It was an enjoyable and leisurely ride of 14km and most of it was flat. At the corners a raised watch area was situated, usually with a steep ramp up to it. Although there was a detour around these, every time we reached one Paul insisted on accelerating towards and riding up it, with me helpless to stop on the back squealing that we wouldn't make it! Of course we did though, and then we had fun coming swiftly down the other side. We got a good look at all four of the gatehouses which were great examples of ancient architecture and very well kept with vivid colours and a few surviving artefacts to see, particularly furniture.
After returning the bikes and Sjofn had left to do her own thing, we walk off outside the city wall to track down the Wild Goose Pagoda which we had been told was worth a look. 25 minutes of an interesting but rather hot walk later and we found it, in the grounds of the national museum. Just wanting a little look at the outside of the pagoda we were disappointed to find that we'd have to pay the full museum entry to get anywhere near it. Feeling a little on the poor/tight side and without the time to do justice to the museum we decided to view the top of the pagoda from a distance, then walk back to the old city a slightly different way.
Back at the hotel we had time for a shower before it was time to meet up with the rest of the group and get our transport to the train station to catch our very last night train in China.
